The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification is the best and most comprehensive course of its kind to offer relevant and realistic first-aid training for seasonal outdoor activities or short-term wilderness endeavors and pursuits.
WFA is a two-day introduction to general medical concepts and basic life support skills. This short and intensive course helps prepare those who work, play, and travel in remote environments. Our training prepares students to think critically and make decisions on whether injuries are serious or not, provide life-saving treatments, and determine appropriate evacuation plans. This course is taught by professional instructors with significant patient care experience and back-country wilderness experience.

Prerequisites
Students must be 16 years of age to participate in this course. Those under 18 years of age must have written proof of parental consent.

The WFA includes a broad range of introductory medical skills and topics, including patient assessment, CPR, AED, and basic life support skills. Students also learn how to effectively manage life-threatening circulatory, respiratory and nervous system problems , basic wounds, infection, musculoskeletal injuries, spinal injuries, allergic reactions and anaphalaxis, environmental emergencies: hypothermia, lightning, hyponatremia, drowning. Medical problems: abdominal pain, chest pain, UTI and diabetes. Builing of a adequate first aid kit. Radio communication.

Please be prepared for all seasonal weather conditions and bring the appropriate clothing, footwear, and gear. We will try to spend as much time as possible outside!
- Notebook with pen or pencil

- Clothing that may be stained or cut during simulations

- First aid kit. Don’t worry if you don’t have one. We will build a kit for your needs)
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat, adequate clothing for the time of year
- Gear in your vechicle that you’d normally carry in the field

- Course Completion and Grades:
- Successful completion with certification is based on 100% attendance, satisfactory performance on all assigned homework and quizzes, as well as demonstrated proficiency with hands-on practical skills. Students must also obtain an 80% or better on the final written exam.
- Certification:
- Upon successful completion, students will receive Wilderness First Aid, Anaphylaxis, and Healthcare Provider level CPR certifications from Wilderness Medical Associates. All WMA certifications are valid for three years.
- Cancellation Policy:
- For all courses that are cancelled more than 60 days from the course start date a full refund minus $100 registration fee will be provided.
- For cancellations less than 60 days, but more than 4 weeks from course start date students receive a 50% refund.
- For cancellations less than 4 weeks from course start date there is no refund.
What to Expect From the Course
- Be ready to learn, develop confidence, and utilize critical thinking skills in wilderness medicine.
- Realistic emergency simulations will be staged, complete with fake wounds and injuries. Students alternate playing the role of both rescuer and patient. These sims are meant to get your adrenaline pumping; forcing you to think critically under pressure, so you can take action in a real wilderness medical emergency.
- Course days are long 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and intense consisting of both classroom lectures and in the field training. Expect assigned homework. Expect to be fully immersed in wilderness medicine from day 1.
- Upon registration, participants will receive an email outlining specific meeting times for their course.
- 100% attendance is required.
